In 1852, the pharmacist Adolf Bergmann founded Waldheimer Parfümerie und Toilettenseifenfabrik, one of the first cosmetics firms in Germany. The company became famous for its invention of tooth soap, a forerunner of today's toothpaste. From 1875 onwards, body care products were also produced along with toilet soaps.
In 1920, Florena was officially registered as a trademark by the Imperial Patent Office in Munich. One of its first products was Florena Talcum Powder.
In 1946, the firm was nationalized and renamed "VEB Rosodont-Werke".
The first Florena Skin Cream was launched in 1950 and was a forerunner of today's cream for the entire family. In 1952, the range was expanded to include the new Florena Bath Soap and Florena Nut Oil.
In 1965, Florena Creme also achieved international fame, especially in the Eastern Bloc countries. Large amounts of shaving soap, perfume, and perfumed soaps were exported to the then Soviet Union. In 1981, the firm became part of VEB Kosmetik-Kombinat Berlin, the largest cosmetics manufacturer in the German Democratic Republic.
In 1989, cooperation with Beiersdorf started, with Florena producing NIVEA under license. After reunification, the company was privatized and has traded since then as Florena Cosmetic GmbH. Since 2002, Florena Cosmetic GmbH has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Beiersdorf AG.
