The skin protects the body, helps it to breathe, regulates body temperature and produces substances that the body needs. It is also an incomparable organ of sense and expression. So people have every reason to take care of and protect their skin – and we have to develop products for all skin types. That’s the mission of Beiersdorf’s research: to develop customized products that are precisely formulated, comprehensively tested, and extremely effective.
Before you can develop an innovative product, you have to ask the right questions. That’s why the research, prototype, product development, marketing and market research experts sit down together to discuss their ideas at the very beginning of every new project. "On the one hand, our product development is focussing on consumer preferences of course. We maintain regular dialogue with consumers around the globe so that we can stay up to date on their skin care expectations and needs. On the other hand, the scientific progress provides us with greater insights into the nature of skin and helps us to develop more advanced products. The combination of these two aspects makes it possible for us to create new and genuinely innovative skin care products," said Dr. Horst Wenck, Corporate Vice President for Research at Beiersdorf.
"Learning from the skin for the skin" – this is the maxim of the skin researchers at Beiersdorf. Every day human, cellular and molecular biologists, as well as immunologists and biochemists, decipher processes which take place deep within the human skin at the research center in Hamburg. And they’re not searching for substances which are simply applied externally to the skin, but rather innovative active ingredients which either support or inhibit natural process within the skin with maximum effectiveness. Furthermore, a group of physicians and bioengineers accompanies biological research by developing new methods for in-vivo measurement of different skin parameters. State-of-the-art technologies are applied in order to decipher the secrets of every skin layer.
