The fluorescent microscope images can be used to draw conclusions about the location and quantity of features such as structural proteins in individual cells. The technology also allows to visualize changes caused by aging and to draw direct comparisons between young and old skin cells. Because the microscope is housed in a plexiglass chamber, environmental parameters such as temperature and humidity can be varied so that cells can be observed over relatively long periods of time. This allows to test active ingredients, gathering microscopic evidence of the effect that these agents have on the mechanisms of aging.
