The smoothing effects of skin care products have been subjected to substantiation with world‐class PRIMOS (Phase Shifting Rapid In-vivo Measurement of Skin) technology at the Hamburg Research Center since 1997. PRIMOS is a system that performs contactless measurement of the surface of the human skin. It’s a technology which was designed by Beiersdorf for dermatological research purposes, and has become an international standard ever since. The technology was first used, for example, in the automotive industry.

During the measurement of the eye wrinkles, a sort of 3D map of the skin’s surface is created. White light is projected in the form of fine parallel lines onto the area of the skin to be measured. Wrinkles and skin irregularities cause deflection of these originally straight lines. The resultant image is recorded at a precisely defined angle. Based on these recordings, wrinkle depth is then calculated by a computer program. 600,000 height data are generated per measurement, each of which takes only a few milliseconds, and the computer program filters out the data that are relevant for wrinkle depth or skin irregularities.
The PRIMOS measurement is usually conducted three times: Wrinkle depth is initially measured before the test product is applied, and the volunteers are then provided with a product for daily use. The same area of skin is measured again after four and eight weeks.
