Social Responsibility

Exercising Our Social Responsibility

We want to actively take responsibility in the wider world by supporting socially disadvantaged members of the community. Our social commitment is guided by our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy under the claim “We care & connect.” This provides a logical framework for ensuring that our work in this area is successful and effective. Our goal is a win-win-win situation: for society, for our partners, and for the company and our brands. We aim to positively influence the world around us by supporting activities that are in line with our brands and build on Beiersdorf’s strengths. All our activities around the world are based on the principle of “helping people to help themselves” and meet the following criteria: local relevance, longevity, a mutually-beneficial approach, and measurable impacts.

Our Projects

Beiersdorf and its brands are committed to various initiatives around the world. Here are some of them:

Beiersdorf supports the “SISTER2sister” mentoring program in Australia, an initiative run by the non-profit organization “Life Changing Experiences.” Teenage girls from disadvantaged social backgrounds are assigned a "big sister" mentor for a year as a positive female role model to provide individual support and guidance for problems at school and in girls’ personal lives. The program aims to equip girls with life skills and self-confidence, encouraging them to follow their own goals and dreams. Beiersdorf employees help organize career workshops and numerous donation drives, which help to finance the project. ...more

NIVEA and the children’s development organization Plan International are carrying out a joint education project in Central Java, Indonesia. Only 3% of children in these program areas are enrolled in pre-school due to the costs involved e.g. writing materials or school uniforms. In addition, the learning conditions for those who do attend are very poor because of insufficient training for teachers and a lack of child friendly learning materials. The project provides access to quality education for 6,000 boys and girls, age six to twelve. It focuses on improving the learning environment and further training for 180 teachers in 30 schools. This includes areas such as child friendly teaching and understanding and raising awareness of children’s rights. 4,000 parents and community members are also involved.

In 2012 NIVEA Romania developed a series of fundraising activities together with the SOS Children's Villages charity. These activities focused on promoting the need for unity within families and sponsoring programs aimed at preventing child abandonment. The international Family Day on May 15th was celebrated with a public family event in Sibiu. Families were able to participate in a series of activities, for example, parents and children were given canvases, watercolors and paintbrushes and were invited to paint their idea of a perfect family. Afterwards, the paintings were auctioned and the money raised was given to SOS Children's Villages Romania. Families also enjoyed other activities, such as playing educational games and taking family pictures, all of which emphasize the importance of staying strong as a family. In 2012 NIVEA Romania raised a total of €40,000 for SOS Children's Villages Romania.

The cooperation between NIVEA Germany and the German Life-Saving Association (DLRG) has already existed for over 60 years. Children’s safety in and around water is the theme at the heart of this partnership. The consistent development of the cooperation through joint projects, such as the kindergarten days, the beach party tours and the “Learn to Swim with NIVEA” campaign, is the hallmark of this partnership. In October 2012 the renowned "NIVEA Lifesaving Award" was presented for the 24th time. State Minister Prof. Dr. Maria Böhmer attended the ceremony and stressed in her speech the uniqueness of this award that stands for selflessness and exceptional commitment to saving lives, for civilian courage and civic commitment.

In Germany, Beiersdorf’s medical skin care brand Eucerin is committed to helping neurodermatitis patients through its cooperation with the organization "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Neurodermitisschulung e.V." (AGNES). As an interdisciplinary organization including doctors and nurses as well as teachers and psychologists, AGNES provides all relevant education for neurodermatitis patients and their families in group training sessions. Together with the AGNES, Eucerin established individual skin care consultations for children and their families, who are particularly affected by the disease. Eucerin sponsors more than 1,000 consultations per year and donates its medical skin care products. With their combined expertise, the two partners want to improve the quality of life of children suffering from neurodermatitis, and support their families in caring for them.

In 2009 Hansaplast joined forces with the French Red Cross to strengthen first aid in everyday life. Since both partners share a significant expertise for wound care, this partnership offers various opportunities for them to promote the right first aid techniques and the prevention of domestic accidents. To achieve this mission, Hansaplast and the Red Cross have set up a joint website, which provides helpful information for families about safety at home and the right behavior when treating minor injuries. By designing interactive online resources and developing a training comic book the partners train parents and children in a playful way. In 2012 Hansaplast joined the Red Cross on its 11th annual summer tour through France. For two months, a caravan travelled through the 16 biggest cities in France to promote the organization’s work. At these events Hansaplast offered first aid trainings courses for kids. This collaboration will continue in 2013 and beyond. ...more
