We’ve reached our first sustainability commitment ahead of schedule

We’re delighted to say that our sustainability strategy “We Care.” is already making a big difference in our three target areas: Products, Planet and People. Launched in 2011, we set ourselves a number of commitments to achieve by 2020 such as:

  • Products: Generating 50 % of our sales from products with a significantly reduced environmental impact (base year 2011).
  • Planet: Reducing our CO2 emission by 30 % per product sold (base year 2005).
  • People: Reaching and improving the lives of one million families (base year 2013).
We have cut our CO2 emissions per product sold by 48% and have, therefore, already exceeded our ‘Planet’ commitment for 2020 by 18 percentage points.
Inken Hollmann-Peters, Vice President Corporate Communications & Sustainability

Our Sustainability Review 2014 outlines our achievements to date and we are very happy to report that we have already achieved some important milestones ahead of schedule. "We have cut our CO2 emissions per product sold by 48% and have, therefore, already exceeded our ‘Planet’ commitment for 2020 by 18 percentage points", says Inken Hollmann-Peters, Vice President Corporate Communications & Sustainability.

In the field of ‘Products’, we have also made a significant but surprising discovery – that plastic packaging is actually more environmentally friendly for our NIVEA Face Care range than the previously used glass containers. By switching the whole NIVEA Face Care range to plastic jars, the packaging's greenhouse gas potential can be cut by at least 15 %.

In terms of ‘People’, a total of 244,811 families have already been supported sustainably through the global social commitment of the company, its brands and employees. We would like to thank employees around the world for showing their support for the brand’s social commitment during the "NIVEA Family Days". This annual initiative invites employees to set up social activities in order to support families in their local communities.
