Beiersdorf’s innovations: our science-based skin care solutions

Innovation is not only the key to our business success, it is part of our corporate DNA – and has been for over 140 years. Skin care expertise and science are crucial throughout our innovation process. They are the foundations on which our claim to be a leading skin care innovator is based. We invented modern skin care in 1911 with the world’s first stable water-in-oil emulsion – and have been setting new standards ever since. Thanks to our scientific know-how, we are gaining an ever-greater understanding of the complex processes of the skin, enabling us to even develop our own characteristic ingredients that work with it.

OTHER INNOVATION MILESTONES

COENZYME Q10

Beiersdorf was the first company in 1998 to integrate the skin’s own coenzyme Q10 as an active ingredient in skin care products for the mass market, specifically increasing the skin’s energy level. A trailblazer for active ingredient cosmetics.

More about Q10

For more than 50 years, Beiersdorf has been a leader in sun care expertise. In 1975, our scientists played a key role in developing and establishing the sun protection factor (SPF) as an international standard. Our latest sun protection formula with CITRACELL‑PROTECT™ technology goes beyond SPF and provides an additional layer of protection within the skin. Its light, fast‑absorbing texture also promotes regular use.

SUN PROTECTION EXPERTISE

The result of decades of dermatological research, the Second Skin Protection plaster combines state-of-the-art technology with maximum protection and optimal healing support – ultra-thin, flexible and self-adhesive, for optimal protection for everyday wounds. The innovative hydrocolloid technology actively promotes moist wound healing, which supports the natural healing process.

SECOND SKIN PROTECTION

BLACK & WHITE ANTISTAIN DEODORANTS

Today, many consumers are looking for deodorants that provide long-lasting protection without leaving stains on clothing. We developed a successful solution: NIVEA Invisible Black & White. White stains caused by aluminum salts are made almost invisible through a special coating technology. Yellow stains, resulting from various soil substances, adhere far less to textile fibers thanks to the innovative formula. The result: black clothing stays black and white clothing stays white for longer.

In 1911, pharmacist Dr. Oscar Troplowitz, dermatologist Dr. Paul Gerson Unna, and chemist Dr. Isaac Lifschütz developed NIVEA Creme, whose properties would go on to revolutionize the world of skin care. Its foundation was Lifschütz’s earlier discovery of the emulsifying agent Eucerit, extracted from sheep’s wool wax. This breakthrough made the impossible possible: for the first time, water and oil could be permanently combined into a stable water-in-oil emulsion – the iconic NIVEA Creme.
