Energy Management in Production

Energy consumption at our production sites is influenced by a range of factors – including the efficiency of assets, operating parameters for compressed air, hot water or steam, as well as building insulation and outside temperatures.

Through our “Sustainability in Manufacturing” initiative, we develop site-specific sustainability concepts that address topics such as energy efficiency, greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water management. These, plans include measures tailored to the technical conditions, operational requirements and improvement opportunities identified at each site.

At nine of our production sites, we managed to reduce the amount of purchased electricity per piece produced during 2025 versus the previous year. This was achieved by measures such as optimizing compressed air generation, ventilation systems, heat pump efficiency and the use of waste heat. For example, in our production site in Argentona, Spain, the hot water boilers have been replaced with heat pumps. And in our production site in Leipzig, Germany, we generate up to 1 MW more electricity than we consume.

Thanks to our 4.6 MW photovoltaic system, we achieve this between March and September at non-cloudy days around noontime.

Energy management requirements

Our established Energy Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) define minimum requirements for energy management at all Beiersdorf production sites worldwide. The SOP stipulate that energy-saving potential must be systematically analyzed and documented, and that optimization measures are implemented consistently. They also ensure that energy efficiency is considered from the planning stage of any new construction, expansion or upgrade project – across our production network.

At our company headquarters and at our production sites in Hamburg, Leipzig and Berlin, we also operate an energy management system certified to ISO 50001.
