Your Tasks

We offer excellent opportunities for researchers who would like to do their PhD thesis in our supporting Research & Development environment. With more than 450 researchers, our main Skin Research Centre in Hamburg is one of the largest and most advanced in Germany - and one of the most important in the world. At our Microbiome Research unit we analyze the skin’s microbiome and its role in skin biology using state-of-the-art NGS technologies in combination with culture-dependent approaches.

The PhD thesis aims to deeply understand the complex system of skin microbial communities, their interaction with the human host and to create new treatment approaches for different skin conditions. The project combines a wide range of biochemical, microbiological and omics techniques, including purification and downstream analysis of bacterial peptides, sequencing, bioinformatics as well as enrichment and characterization of skin microorganisms.

The successful PhD candidate will:

  • Perform multiple (comparative) genomic analyses
  • Perform physiological experiments with skin microorganisms
  • Identify approaches to alter the skin microbiome
  • Establish options for new skin treatments

Your Profile

  • Master’s degree in Microbiology / Biochemistry / Molecular Life Sciences or aligned field
  • Strong background in Microbiology/ Microbial Ecology /Biochemistry
  • Experienced in Microbial Genomics / analyzing NGS data / Bioinformatics
  • Ideally familiar in handling big data sets
