For Sustainable Land Use

At Beiersdorf we rely on natural raw materials for the ongoing development of our product formulas. Our goal is therefore neither to burden nor damage the environment through our sourcing or use of these precious raw materials. For this reason, we have firmly anchored “Sustainable land use and procurement” as a focus area of our sustainability agenda.

Sustainable Palm (Kernel) Oil

Sustainable Palm (Kernel) Oil

High quality, natural palm (kernel) oil is a vital raw material for our cosmetics and personal care products. Since 2011 we have therefore actively engaged for the sustainable cultivation of palm (kernel) oil without further deforestation. And we are on the right track with our Sustainable Palm Roadmap: By the end of 2019 we covered 91% of our sourcing requirements with certified sustainable palm (kernel) oil. We are also working to increase transparency in the palm oil supply chain and at the same time supporting smallholder farmers in developing both sustainable palm cultivation and more sustainable agricultural communities.

Shea Butter: Natural Care from West Africa

Beiersdorf has been an active member of the Global Shea Alliance (GSA) since 2019 and supports a sustainable shea supply chain. Thanks to its outstanding skin-nurturing properties, Shea butter is one of the key raw materials we use in our personal care products. Together with the GSA, we support 10,000 female Shea collectors in West Africa in improving their economic situation and their families’ living conditions.

Paper-based materials

Paper-based materials

Since we use paper and cardboard for many of our product packagings, it is important to us to also source this natural resource sustainably. We have established a “Sustainable Paper and Cardboard Policy” with the goal to switch to 100% sustainable paper and cardboard materials worldwide by 2020. We were able to achieve this in 2019 already. Today, 100% of our folding boxes, which we use to pack our face creams, for example, are made of FSC-certified material (“Forest Stewardship Council”) and we are currently working on converting other paper-based materials to FSC as well.
