Hamburg, June 20, 2016 – Under the motto “PEARLFINDERS – We Open Innovation” the NIVEA manufacturer Beiersdorf is intensifying its communications about open innovation activities. “The collaboration with external innovation partners from industries and the scientific community is an important field for our Research & Development”, says Andreas Clausen, Corporate Director Open Innovation & Innovation Portfolio. “Under the new communications umbrella PEARLFINDERS we want to increase our visibility as an attractive and trustworthy partner.” This includes in addition to the comprehensive name also a uniform image. Beiersdorf will also continue to expand its communication activities about innovation partnerships and projects.

A Network of Over 500 External Cooperation Partners

For many years Beiersdorf’s Research & Development has worked intensively and successfully with more than meanwhile 500 external cooperation partners and can already look back on a large number of projects and innovations developed in collaboration. The invention of NIVEA Creme in 1911 itself resulted from a cooperation with the dermatologist Dr. Paul Gerson Unna. Many of today’s product innovations like Q10 Pearls and the NIVEA Protect&Shave swivel hinge razor for women as well as the development of innovative packaging like the NIVEA Face Jar also became possible through close collaboration with external partners. And with Dr. Stefan Hell, the comprehensive academic cooperation network of the company even boasts a Nobel Prize winner.

Focused Expansion of Open Innovation Activities

In addition to maintaining the network and strategic partnerships with leading research institutes, universities and suppliers, Beiersdorf has systematically expanded its open innovation activities in recent years. One central element here is the open innovation platform Pearlfinder introduced in 2011, which is the source of the comprehensive name PEARLFINDERS.

It is being renamed “TRUSTED NETWORK” under the new communications umbrella and can be found at the new address Further open innovation formats from Beiersdorf include the Innovation Pitch at the cosmetics trade fair “in-cosmetics” and in-house events like for example the Supplier Fair and the Formulation Academy, at which select innovation partners present ideas and trends.

Kickoff for PEARLFINDERS at the Formulation Academy

One Formulation Academy already started under PEARLFINDERS last week: At the event a long-term innovation partner presented exclusive new ideas, raw materials and technological knowledge for textures and formulations in the product divisions of Face Care, Body Care and Sun Care before 80 researchers. “The interesting thing about this format is that it gives our employees right here the opportunity to learn about formulations and product ideas, to have open conversations with partners directly and to take ‘unfiltered’ inspiration,” says Andreas Clausen. “From the feedback of our colleagues from the in-house events we know that in addition to gaining knowledge already ideas and solutions have emerged that either never would have come on their own, or only much later.”
