Your Tasks

The Director of Clinical & Scientific Affairs, Derma serves as the lead clinical testing expert to support product safety and advertising claims (Clinical Affairs) on all Derma brands, as well as a scientific liaison to the various business units, to consumers, and to scientific and medical professionals outside of the company (Scientific Affairs).

Reporting to the Head of Clinical & Scientific Affairs, this role oversees a team of three responsible for all launch and post-launch clinical testing and claim-support activities.

The position acts as a strategic advisor to local and HQ teams on product concepts to navigate US regulatory challenges and makes recommendations on risk assessment and mitigation. The Director of Clinical & Scientific Affairs Derma assesses new product and category opportunities and advises on the scientific strategic approach and represents and coordinates the scientific support in the case of legal challenges. He/she enhances the trust and credibility of the products and Derma brands by developing relationships with Key Opinion Leaders, by demonstrating knowledge and competency in the skin care category, and by sharing Beiersdorf's scientific knowledge and research capabilities through scientific presentations and publications.

This hybrid position requires three days per week onsite at the U.S. Innovation Center in Florham Park, NJ, with periodic travel to Stamford, CT, and up to 30% domestic and international travel, including occasional evenings and weekends for critical meetings and conferences.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, advise, and influence Brand teams and international partners on new product opportunities and Derma brand expansion categories in the US
  • Assess global claims and scientific support and propose US compliant modifications of product positioning and claims concepts for new launches
  • Develop and oversee safety and efficacy test plan, and claims substantiation strategy for Consumer and Medical communications
  • Advise HQ R&D on US market, scientific and regulatory dynamics (in partnership with the US Regulatory functions) that impact the current and future pipeline
  • Function as a key strategic partner in annual Dermatology Advisory Board meetings
  • Advise senior management on risk assessment and specific mitigation strategies to protect the US business
  • Innovate and propose new testing methods to expand product testing capabilities and tools outside of today’s CRO-localized testing methodologies
  • Presents and train medical audiences and KOL Speakers Bureau participants (including Dermatologists, Physicians Assistants, Nurse Practitioners) on Derma product science and clinical efficacy data

Your Profile

PhD, PharmD degree or equivalent in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, Biology, Biophysics, Bioengineering with 10+ years of skincare experience in a cosmetic, OTC or pharmaceutical company.

MS degree or BS degree Biological Sciences, Biomedical Science, Biology, Biophysics, Bioengineering with 14+ years of claim support and clinical testing experience in an industry setting.

Requirements:

Highly motivated, proactive personality, with a sense of urgency, able to work well independently and in teams.

Experience in clinical study design and execution and familiarity with a range of biophysical testing methods.

Experience leading, developing, and motivating a team.

Extensive knowledge of US regulations governing cosmetic and OTC drugs and current standards for competent and reliable scientific support of claims.

Broad knowledge of the therapeutic skin care category, skin science and medical indications

Experience collaborating with Legal and Sr. Management on risk mitigation on challenging topics and the scientific basis and rationale to defend against legal and regulatory challenges.

Experience collaborating, negotiating, and finding common ground with internal stakeholders, especially Marketing, Legal and Regulatory teams.

Strong leadership and people management skills with experience mentoring multidisciplinary teams.

Excellent organizational skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Proficient computer skills, with the Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.

Facility communicating proficiently with members of the external scientific and medical community and developing trustworthy relationships.

Excellent communication and storytelling ability—able to bridge scientific depth with business and consumer relevance

Scientific publication track-record.
