Waste and the proper management of it plays an important role in our focus field “Fully Circular Resources” and is an important contributor to the reduction of our GHG emissions. We try to avoid waste wherever possible and aim to recycle unavoidable waste as effectively as possible. This enables a valuable contribution to climate protection. As the disposal of waste via landfill proves to be a particular burden on our environment and we are committed to the target of “Zero Waste to Landfill”.
The donation of overstock products to charitable organizations and the sustainable handling of foods are other examples of how we approach waste as a holistic topic within our sustainability agenda CARE BEYOND SKIN. As a mid-term target, we want to achieve a 30% waste reduction in our production facilities by 2025. Our other commitments can be found here.

Waste management in our production

Waste management in our production

We have been working for years to reduce our waste to a large extent or even to avoid it completely. This applies particularly to our production facilities and warehouse locations. As an environmentally conscious company, we also see it as our responsibility to make the best use of unavoidable waste. For this reason, we are constantly optimizing our disposal channels and separating waste such as cardboard and paper, foil or plastic packaging in order to return it to the material cycle, as far as the disposal structure in the respective countries allows this. Since 2016, our production facilities and larger logistic centers have pursued the target “Zero Waste to Landfill” and we plan to achieve it in 2021. We are thus making a significant contribution to environmental and climate protection.

Product donations

Waste can also result from excessive stocks of finished goods in our warehouses. Despite precise supply chain planning, it is sometimes unavoidable that goods can no longer be sold. The result is then an overstock of products which still have an excellent quality. Our systems detect this situation at an early stage, so we can mark the goods as potential donations. Skin care, cleansing and wound care products are needed in many social institutions and projects around the world, so by donating them in line with the needs of the recipients, we contribute to society and protect the environment, as faultless products are kept from being wasted. A special project in this context is our cooperation with the “In Kind Direct International” network. In some European countries, we work with the organization that transfers our product donations to charities. In Germany we work together with the non-profit organization “innatura”.

Our handling of food

We also place a high importance to the sustainable handling of the food we purchase and process. This ranges from the regional procurement to the avoidance of food waste. At our corporate headquarters in Hamburg, we have been working for years with the Non-Profit Organization “foodsharing e.V.”. This association transfers our surplus food to social institutions within Hamburg, in accordance with German food laws. Certainly, we try to create as little surplus as possible, but there are always some unavoidable leftovers. In 2020, we donated around 4.3 tons of unused foods to local institutions, which were then able to process them in their own kitchens for people in need.
