Energy Management in Production

At our production sites around the world, we maintain full control over our energy efficiency and emissions. That is why we take a particularly consistent approach and lead by example – also as a role model for our partners. As part of our global “Sustainability in Manufacturing” initiative, we develop site-specific sustainability concepts to continuously reduce our environmental impact. These include targeted measures to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, cut waste and minimize water consumption.

Energy consumption at our production sites is influenced by a range of factors – including the efficiency of assets, operating parameters for compressed air, hot water or steam, as well as building insulation and outside temperatures. The “Sustainability in Manufacturing” initiative helps us systematically identify energy-saving potential worldwide and implement the energy transition step by step.

At several production sites, we have significantly reduced electricity consumption by optimizing compressed air generation, ventilation systems, pump efficiency and the use of waste heat. In Argentona, Spain, our production center now operates without fuel, as the hot water boilers have been replaced with heat pumps. And in Leipzig, Germany, we sometimes generate more electricity than we consume – thanks to a 4.6 MW photovoltaic system.

We ensure that all insights gained locally are shared across our international network as best-practice examples – and applied at other sites wherever appropriate.

Energy management to Strict Standards

Our established Energy Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) defines binding minimum requirements for energy management at all Beiersdorf production sites worldwide. Among other things, the SOP stipulates that energy-saving potential must be systematically analyzed and documented, and that optimization measures are implemented consistently. It also ensures that energy efficiency is considered from the planning stage of any new construction, expansion or upgrade project – across our entire global production network.

At our company headquarters and at our production sites in Hamburg and Berlin, we also operate an energy management system certified to ISO 50001.
